Australia's Measurement System
History of Measurement in Australia
Important events (including metric conversion) in the history of measurement in Australia.
How Australia's Measurement System Works
Australia has a well-developed standards and conformance infrastructure and its measurement system is based on the traceability of Australian legal units of measurement.
International Metrology
As one of the world's leading national metrology institutes, NMI maintains a strong engagement with the international metrology community.
Legal Metrology
Legal metrology comprises all measurements carried out for any legal purpose and includes measurements that are subject to regulation by law or government decree.
Measurement Legislation
The National Measurement Act, its Regulations and Guidelines, together with the National Trade Measurement Regulations provide a legal framework for Australia's measurement system.
Significant Achievements
Some of NMI's significant achievements.
World Metrology Day Awards
20 May is World Metrology Day, an international annual event that marks the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. In recognition of this NMI has created two awards.
