20 May is World Metrology Day, an international annual event that marks the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. The Metre Convention created the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and its application in industry, science and society.
In recognition of World Metrology Day, in 2008 NMI created two awards that acknowledge and celebrate outstanding achievement in measurement research and/or excellence in practical measurements in the fields of academia, research or industry in Australia. The theme for 2010 was Measurements in Science and Technology – A Bridge to Innovation.
On 20 May Parliamentary Secretary Richard Marles announced that Professor Ken Baldwin was the recipient of the Barry Inglis Medal for excellence in measurement science (click here for a media release) and on 21 July, Professor Baldwin was presented with his award (click here for a media release).
