NMI appoints legal metrology authorities to support the needs of the national measurement system, namely:

• approving authorities to conduct pattern approval testing of electricity meters, water meters and evidential breath-alcohol analysers
• certifying authorities to certify/recertify measuring instruments (evidential breath-alcohol analysers and grain protein measuring instruments) and reference materials (aqueous ethanol solutions and whole grain barley and wheat)
• verifying authorities to verify/reverify reference standards of measurement
• utility meter verifiers to verify/reverify electricity meters and water meters

Approving Authorities

Approving authorities may be appointed to carry out pattern approval testing of measuring instruments used for trade or regulatory purposes. So far approving authorities have been appointed to test electricity meters, water meters and evidential breath analysers. Complete this form to express interest in (re)appointment as an approving authority.

To apply for pattern approval of a measuring instrument, a test report should be obtained from an approving authority and an application form for pattern approval should be submitted to NMI. Click here for more information on the pattern approval process.
