Pressure Measurement Training Program

This innovative program provides a pathway for people currently working in pressure measurement to further develop their knowledge and skills. It consists of:

  • a two-day training course which covers essential knowledge of the calibration and use of a wide range of pressure measuring instruments, their principles of operation and potential sources of error — it incorporates extensive hands-on practical exercises; and
  • a post-course assessment based on the application of knowledge and skills in the workplace

Refer to the Participants Handbook for an outline of support services for participants and key policies including participant's rights and responsibilities.

Objectives

The course provides participants with the knowledge and skills:

  • to understand the principles of operation of a variety of pressure measuring instruments
  • to understand the processes involved in the use and calibration of pressure equipment
  • to identify the various sources of error that affect pressure measurements

Outline

The topics covered include:

  • introduction to pressure measurement
  • traceability and international standards
  • vacuum pressure measurement
  • pressure transducers and calibrators
  • barometry, manometry and liquid columns
  • differential and gauge pressure measurement
  • the piston gauge and its use
  • high pressure
  • estimating measurement uncertainty (participants with limited experience would benefit from attending our Introduction to Estimating Measurement Uncertainty course)
  • the use of uncertainties given in NATA-endorsed reports

Course Details (course code PM000)

21 to 22 November 2012 at NMI, 1/153 Bertie Street, Port Melbourne, VIC 3207

$1320 (GST free) includes lunches, refreshments, texts and Monograph 7 Pressure Measurement.

The course will start at 9 am and end by 5 pm.

Assessment

The post-course assessment is based on the application of knowledge and skills in the workplace and involves practical work in the form of a measurement audit and written assessments. Assessment is aligned to the following units of competency from the MSL40109 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques and the MSL50109 Diploma of Laboratory Technology:

  • MSL904001A    Perform standard calibrations (costs $495 and includes a measurement audit)
  • MSL905001A    Perform non-standard calibrations (costs $225)
  • MSL935004A    Maintain instruments and equipment (costs $225)

NMI is registered by ASQA under the Australian Quality Training Framework so candidates who meet all the requirements of the assessment will be awarded a nationally recognised statement of attainment.
