Electrical Measurement Training Program

This innovative program provides a pathway for people currently working in electrical measurement to further develop their knowledge and skills. It consists of:

  • a two-day training course which covers essential knowledge of the theory and practice of electrical measurement using digital multimeters and calibrators; special attention is given to important practical issues such as grounding, interference and thermal effects; and
  • a post-course assessment based on the application of knowledge and skills in the workplace

Refer to the Participants Handbook for an outline of support services for participants and key policies including participant's rights and responsibilities.

Objectives

The course provides participants with the knowledge and skills:
  • to understand the principles of operation of digital multimeters and calibrators
  • to understand the principles and techniques used in the measurement of electrical quantities
  • to understand the processes involved in the use and calibration of electrical equipment
  • to identify various sources of error that affect electrical measurements

Outline

The topics covered include:

  • overview of primary standards
  • measurement of resistance
  • principles of operation of digital multimeters and calibrators
  • measurement of direct voltage and current
  • principles of calibration
  • measurement of alternating voltage and current
  • measurement of high voltage
  • reporting calibration data and uncertainties
  • estimating measurement uncertainty (participants with limited experience would benefit from attending our Introduction to Estimating Measurement Uncertainty course)

    Course Details (course code EM000)

31 October to 1 November 2012 at NMI, Bradfield Road, Lindfield, NSW 2070

$1320 (GST free) includes lunches, refreshments and Monograph 6 The Measurement of Electrical Quantities

The course will start at 9 am and end by 5 pm.

    Assessment

The post-course assessment is based on the application of knowledge and skills in the workplace and involves practical work in the form of a measurement audit and written assessment. Assessment is aligned to the following unit of competency from the MSL40109 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques:

    • MSL904001A Perform Standard Calibrations (costs $495 and includes a measurement audit)

NMI is registered by ASQA under the Australian Quality Training Framework so candidates who meet all the requirements of the assessment will be awarded a nationally recognised statement of attainment.
