All Australian States and Territories now have regulations governing the beneficial use of biosolids. The majority of biosolids are beneficially reused on agricultural land, public gardens and lawns or home gardens. To ensure that excessive levels of new contaminants are not added to otherwise clean soils, the regulations specify that biosolids, and the soils that they are applied to, are monitored for the presence of the major heavy metal and organic chemical contaminants. NMI offers a range of specialised testing services to support the biosolids industry.
NMI also offers a wide range of NATA-accredited analyses for other possible contaminants that are not specified in the guidelines but may be targeted by regulatory authorities. Occasionally new potential contaminant parameters are identified by scientists or regulators. NMI monitors emerging trends and develops new methods as appropriate.
