Acoustics, Ultrasound and Vibration Research
NMI develops measurement techniques to assist in the measurement of air and structure born sound and vibration, and develops and implements equipment to provide the highest possible accuracy in a calibration facility.
Bioanalysis Research
NMI is involved in developing the infrastructure to improve accuracy and comparability in biological measurement and we undertake work on a variety of levels from collaborative activities and contract research through to commercial analysis.
Chemical Metrology Research
NMI continually develops new reference methods for chemical measurements and characterises reference materials to act as calibration standards.
Illicit Drug Profiling
We provide law enforcement agencies with strategic and tactical intelligence in an effort to restrict drug trafficking across Australian borders and obtain successful prosecutions of drug traffickers.
Impedance and Resistance Research
Research is underway to develop improved resistance standards based on the the quantum Hall effect at ac, to improve the calibration chain relating resistance to capacitance, and to provide 1 ohm standard resistors of exceptional electrical stability.
Length and Related Quantities Research
Research activities are being undertaken to develop improved laser wavelength standards and to provide traceability for coordinate measuring machines.
Low Frequency Electrical and Magnetic Quantities Research
Research is being undertaken to develop improved standards for voltage, power and energy.
Mass and Related Quantities Research
Research supports the measurement of density, flow, force, hygrometry, mass, pressure, viscometry and volume.
Nanometrology Research
Our research activities are aimed at the development of new standards, measurement techniques and calibration services for nanostructures and nanomaterials.
Persistent Organic Pollutants
Our research is focused on establishing persistent organic pollutant levels in humans and the environment, using direct sampling and 'passive' sampling methods to enable extremely low detection limits.
Photometry and Radiometry Research
Recent research has concentrated on establishing a cryogenic radiometer as the Australian standard for the candela.
Power Systems Research
Current research is focussed on high-voltage measurement systems, high-voltage insulation, impulse voltage measurement systems and applied dielectrics.
Radio Frequency and Microwave Research
Research is being undertaken to to improve the accuracy and dissemination of standards for electrical quantities at radio and microwave frequencies.
Sports Anti-doping Research
The use of banned drugs in sports is becoming increasingly sophisticated and the need to counter this provides a stimulus for ground-breaking analytical research.
Temperature Research
Recent research has been directed towards improving the accuracy of the temperature scale, developing thermocouples with greater accuracy and investigating the use of thermoluminescence to measure high temperatures.
Time and Frequency Research
NMI is developing improved microwave frequency standards based on trapped ions, diode lasers, GPS time-transfer receivers and two-way satellite time transfer.
