In Australia, national functions in physical, chemical, biological and legal measurement rest with a single organisation, the National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division within the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. Click here to download a list of relevant files depicting NMI's operation.
NMI is responsible for coordinating Australia's measurement system, and for establishing and realising Australia’s units and standards of measurement through the development and maintenance of standards of measurement, reference materials and reference methods.
In order to meet the measurement needs of the government, the public, industry and scientific organisations, NMI undertakes cutting-edge research, provides calibration and analytical services, examines and approves measuring instruments for use for trade and other legal purposes, and runs training courses.
NMI maintains a strong engagement with international and regional metrology organisations, thereby underpinning international recognition of Australia's measurement capabilities. This in turn is critical to the international competitiveness of Australian industry, Australia's ability to attract international investment and access by Australian business to global markets.
World Metrology Day awards
In recognition of World Metrology Day which occurs on 20 May each year, NMI has created two awards for outstanding achievement in measurement. Click here for more information and a nomination form (closing date 31 March 2010).
